Week 1-Sustainability

In the first print workshop, we used recycled materials like used bubble wrap, cardboard, tape, masking tape to make marks. First use roller to paint pigments on the material, and then ’print’ it on to paper snd repeat doing so, lastly scan and re-create the repeated print. I used Photoshop to change the color and adjust the exposure of the cardboard print-make the background yellow and darker the green marks, and adjust the contrasting and color of tape marks. I also enlarge the bubble wrap marks and adjust it into blue background.

Talking about ‘Sustainability’, I first think of the most common concern of fashion industry to the environment and did some research. I was inspired by a book called ’Going Global- The Textile and Apparael Industry’ which introduces types of textiles and materials and especially the organic fabric/material and the design process. After researching, I came up with the idea of expressing the process of developing fabric and the possibility of degradation of textile.

The idea of making this work is inspired by the photographic artwork ’Vase Flowers on the Sea’ by a Taiwanese artist called Huang Yuan-Yu. This artwork reveals the concept of marine drift, the way the artist collage branches, marine debris and contemporary ink painting inspires me to discover the collage of my experimental mark making results. I first made adjustment of the size and color of the scanned work, and then cut different prints into repeat pieces which I designed as a watering and growing plant , lastly I collage pieces together and made them a serie.

Week 2- Technology in Fashion Industry

I use 3D print to make a bracelet: first I made a simple bracelet and the add layers on top.

From the examples of the lecture, I found this unit is quite difficult, not only because these examples are pretty new to me which requires more time to research and understand, but also hard to make a final artwork out without having a precise technology machine or tool. From the lecture, I was able to know what ’NFT’ is and it involves so many different aspects including animation, digital paintings and etc. In the further research I reviewed several collaborations between NFT artists and luxury brands, which assits me in understanding the improvement in fashion industry nowadays. It is difficult to create a NFT art in a short time, so I did more research and found a new trend—3D print items. 3D print fashion is popular in the industry because it helps to save fabrics, it has cool contour the colorful characteristic. I use this idea of to make a small item by using 3D print to be related.

When I was making the design, it is hard at first to control the ’pen’ to keep the thickness the same, or accidentally ’paint’ out to much. After several experiments, I found it is not neccessary to keep every line the same thickness and it is kore important to keep the connection part strong. Also, I found that by strength isn’t the ’paint’ before it drys can make a thick-thin-thick shape of line.

Week 3- Nature

Final Work Display

For the third weekly blog, I created a watercolor painting of a tree with ’river’ branches and lightning splits to express the growth and the similarity in nature. I arrange these three feature in order of thickness, from the bottom is the tree and when it grows the top gets thinner. I use the most obvious and symbolic colors to paint these features and a strong contrast, black color, as background.

About this theme, I was inspired by my primary research, a book called <Forms and Patterns in Nature>. The book introduced more than one hundred patterns in nature from river to animals, which statues that ’Nature use same forms and patterns in different places by large or small scales.’ From the book, the author gives example of ‘river estuary resembles a plant with flowers and leaves, and forked lightning’. I found the perspective is new and interesting because the point author points out is well-founded but I have never thought of the relationship and similarity even though we can found the plants or river around our lives. It is also amazing to discover patterns in nature.

After observation and research I did in the Hyde Park of nature, I was especially focused on the surface of the lake and the branch of trees, so I have the idea of discovering the similarity of different species in the nature and the connections in nature by combining the three patterns of river estuary, lightning and a tree.

Week 4-Cultural Sustainability

I drew sketches by referring to the origin sculpture from Māori in New Zealand, and then use 3D paint to liner or shape the design by different colors, and then combine different features of the same design. Lastly, I use one of these 3D prints to make a repeat print.

From this lecture, I was impressed that our school could arrage a place for refugees and help them to discover their identity and developing their culture and creativity. The traditional bracing technique and pattern designs are unique and beautiful which also reminds me of the topic of self-identity. ‘Culture Sustainability’ could be a huge topic to talk about including culture, history, society, creativity…

I went to the Britain Museum and saw a serie of New Zealand artworks which is about ’Sustaining each other’ of Māori. The Māori artworks are mostly about their ancestors which would capture in their architecture like housing and decorations. In the introduction of Britain Museum, it introduces that ’The house is likened to the ancestor’s body, with the head at the gable and arms outstretched to welcome other ancestors.’. This represents that Māori respect their ancestors and see it as the center of their culture, I was inspired by the shape of the traditional artworks and obsessed with the design of ’ancestors’. Related to the theme ’Culture Sustainability’, the history of Māoris were being colonized and their homeland was being divided and destroyed in the 19th century by Europeans. I wanted to use the unique patterns and design to express the beauty of their culture and the issue the ethnic faced and decolonizing.

Week 5-Empathy

Final Work Display

Empathy is to consider by others’ perspective and situation, and to understand and be tolerate and caring to others. By having this week’s session, I have fully understand how learning ’empathy’ will help in better relationship with people around you and will develop the understanding of disadvantaged that are not around. Overall, being empathetic as a designer can assist us by considering more aspects in designing and express own style with caring about the society, which can improve the reliability of the product.

In creating this unit’s work, I was thinking of my grandmother who is not familiar with online payment at all and always confused with using her phone. Nowadays, online payment by Wechat, Alipay are very popular and almost replace cash payment in China. It is convenient for younger generation, however it is not friendly and lack of considering for older people like my grandmother. Inspired this idea, I wanted to create an artwork that express the difficulty of older people struggling with online payment and to reflect lack of empathy in the society.

I use paper cutting and different types of paper to collage to make an older people’s hand which emphasizes the wrinkles on their hand, and use Procreate to make a short animation. It shows the process of older people touching their phone and being confused, also families are lack of empathy while teaching elders to use online payment so I use the awkward face to express the idea.
