Week 1: Sustainability
By using acrylic paint to create different shapes and textures, I was able to successfully create prints which integrated the theme of ‘sustainability’.

Collaging, mark-making, prints- photocopying and physical collage.

Collaging, mark-making, prints- scanning mark-making and digital design.
I experimented with different scales and the ‘colour burn’ feature on Photoshop to create an alternate colour palette.
Week 2: Emerging Technologies
I considered the social effects of emerging technologies, especially the increased interconnectivity of people by sharing of ideas, cultures and information, allowing for more global collaboration in design, production and development.

I wanted to explore how to present ‘interconnectivity’ by emerging technologies and decided to replicate this by weaving cables and wires.

Week 4: Cultural Sustainability

Week 5: Empathy

Following the lecture and investigating the theme of empathy, I wanted to consider how colour and materials affect mood; which make me feel relaxed, at ease and safe.

Throughout this project, I enjoyed the fast pace because responding in an accelerated manner that expressed what had inspired me that week meant that I wasn’t overly precious about my work. I especially enjoyed the cultural sustainability lecture, discussing heritage and maintenance of ‘self-identity’. In hindsight I wish that I had explored further from my own discipline, perhaps including making a 3D sculptural piece as opposed to prints, in order to stretch myself beyond my comfort zone. I learnt that to create a response, I must research around the given topic further in order to narrow down what I want to explore further. Additionally, by narrowing down the lecture topic, I was able to focus on creating a relevant response that didn’t feel like an unreachable, overwhelming task. I think that I could have explored the sustainability lecture in more detail because there’s so many avenues and elements in the theme, whereas I think that I responded in a very basic manner. In future, I will ensure that I explore the theme in more depth in order to create a more interesting response as opposed to something general because it will aid me in future for design development and experimentation if I have a more interesting and inspiring topic to work off. Overall, I am proud of my work for this unit however, after reflecting, it’s clear to me that I could have been more inspired had I researched in more depth on elements of the lectures that I found interesting.
Looking through these five weeks works, I feel that you have strong hands-on ability and execution ability, you can express your ideas well with your own works, and can complete them in a short time. At the same time, I also think you are very creative and can come up with different but innovative ideas to explore every time.
I like your first week’s work. The pattern printed in the first piece of work looks like leaves and birds, which makes me feel about freedom. I also like the work that is a collage of different textures. I like the sparse and dense distribution of textures. Some are sparse and some are dense. It makes people feel interesting and not boring. They will be interested in it and curious about its subsequent possibilities and the development in the future.
I think it’s a very interesting point in the second week’s work that you used data lines instead of wool for knitting. I noticed that you adjusted them to different proportions and collaged them later. I would wonder how it will look like if the difference of the scale was more obvious.
I really like the colors you created with natural dyeing in the third week. They all look gentle and make me fell relaxed. I was surprised that when this method is used on fabric that already has a texture, the pattern of the texture will show up because of the different shades of color, which looks really good.
The knitted pieces from week 4 look really amazing and I love the patchwork of strips of fabric in different patterns.
I loved week five’s discussion of color’s impact on people’s moods, which I thought would be an interesting question to discuss.
